IEEE NCS PELS Technical Seminar: Grid-Forming Inverters and Fault-Tolerant Modular Multilevel Converters
The IEEE Northern Canada Section (NCS) Power Electronics Society (PELS) Chapter is pleased to host an invited technical seminar on Oct. 2 at University of Alberta, which features two presentations on advanced power electronics technologies for modern power systems.
Please find the presentation information in the following:
Talk 1: Open-Circuit Fault-Tolerant Strategy for Modular Multilevel Converters
Speaker: Mei-Fang Wang, Ph.D. Student, National Sun Yat-sen University
This presentation will discuss an open-circuit fault-tolerant strategy for modular multilevel converters (MMCs), with an emphasis on maintaining reliable converter operation under fault conditions.
Talk 2: Controls of GFM Inverters on Synchronization, Inertia and LVRT
Speaker: Prof. Tzung-Lin Lee, National Sun Yat-sen University
As inverter-based renewable energy continues to grow, grid-forming (GFM) control is becoming increasingly important for maintaining stable operation of power systems, particularly under weak-grid conditions. This talk will introduce control algorithms for GFM inverters, with a focus on synchronization, inertial support, and low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) capabilities.
The planned event schedule on Oct. 2 is as follows:
– 12:30 – 12:40: Arrival, welcome, and pizza
– 12:40 – 1:00: Mei-Fang's presentation (15 min) + Q&A (5 min)
– 1:00 – 1:40: Prof. Tzung-Lin Lee – Invited technical talk (30 min) + Q&A (10 min)
– 1:40 – 2:30: Networking, and lab tour (flexible)
The event is intended for undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, faculty members, and engineers interested in power electronics, power systems, renewable energy integration, and related technologies. The event will also provide an opportunity for participants to interact with the speakers and learn more about their research.
All students, researchers, faculty members, and professionals with an interest in power electronics and power systems are welcome to join us!
Cheers,
IEEE NCS PELS Chapter
