Workshop on Application of Standards in Biomedical Engineering
Overview
This event is proudly brought to you as a collaboration between Engineers Australia Biomedical College, IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS), the Society for Medical and Biological Engineering NSW (SMBE NSW) and Standards Australia. Registration for this event is free for current members of any of these partner organisations.
Biomedical engineering operates within a complex environment of regulatory requirements, quality systems and technical standards. Whether developing innovative medical technologies, managing healthcare equipment or translating research into commercial products, engineers need a strong understanding of how standards influence practice.
This full-day event will introduce participants to the role of standards in biomedical engineering and provide perspectives from academia, healthcare, industry and Standards Australia. Presentations and panel discussions will explore standards development, implementation challenges and their application across research and industry environments.
Participants will gain practical insights into ISO 13485 and AS/NZS 3551 and take part in a hands-on workshop using real medical devices and assessment tools. The event is designed to help engineers build confidence in applying standards throughout the lifecycle of medical technologies.
Learning outcomes
In this presentation, you will learn:
– how standards support quality, safety and regulatory compliance within biomedical engineering
– the role of Standards Australia and the process used to develop and maintain standards
– how ISO 13485 and AS/NZS 3551 are applied in medical device design, management and commercialisation
– practical methods for applying AS/NZS 3551 through hands-on evaluation of medical devices and equipment.
Who should attend?
This event is suited to engineering students, researchers and academics with a view to commercialise their work and early career biomedical engineers with limited familiarity with applying Standards.
