2025 Executive Team
The IEEE Young Professionals program is brought to you through a strong collaborative effort between dedicated IEEE volunteers and professional staff. The executive team works closely with its volunteer representatives in each of the 10 IEEE Regions and over 30 IEEE Technical Societies to ensure that the quality of the program worldwide is consistent among local IEEE Young Professional Affinity Groups, IEEE Regions, and IEEE Technical Societies. Our primary goal is to deliver the best possible experience for you as an IEEE member, by helping you connect with your technical and professional community, and enable career development opportunities as you transition beyond undergraduate education and into the workforce, both in academia and industry.
Leadership
Saveethya Sivakumar
Saaveethya Sivakumar is a faculty member at Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering Curtin University Malaysia. She is also the program coordinator of Bachelor of Computing (Software Engineering) and Head of Training and Development with Faculty of Engineering and Science, Curtin University Malaysia. Saaveethya completed her PhD at Monash University and B.Eng. Electronic and Communication Engineering at Curtin University. She is the proud recipient of the Keysight Best Electronic Communication Graduate Award presented by Curtin Malaysia in 2015.
Her research focus lies in the areas of Machine learning, Signal Processing, Image Processing, Gait Analysis, Biomechanics, and Biomedical Engineering. Saaveethya is currently volunteering as the IEEE MGA Rep at IEEE Young Professionals 2023 and IEEE Region 10 (Asia Pacific) Young Professionals Committee Chair for 2021-2023. She is the immediate past Regional Student Representative of IEEE Region 10 for 2019-2020, for representing student members across the Asia Pacific. She is the recipient of Malaysia Section Women In Engineering Outstanding Volunteer Award in 2016 and IEEE MGA Young Professionals Achievement Award in 2021.
She is strongly interested and motivated in developing STEM skills of students at their early learning stages providing university and pre-university students with interactive learning and collaborative research. As such, her future perspective is to create better wellbeing for existing social needs especially in the field of healthcare technology
Hasala Dharmawardena
Hasala Dharmawardena is an Electric Power Engineer with a combined eleven years of experience working in the design, construction, and commissioning of power systems and in the research and development of transmission and distribution system technology. Hasala specializes in modeling, simulation, and optimization of power systems. He obtained his doctoral degree at Clemson University, USA, master’s degree at NTNU, Norway, and bachelor’s degree at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, all in Electric Power Engineering. He works as a power system consultant at Leidos.
Hasala is an avid energy policy advocate and has contributed to numerous utility rate cases across the globe. A passionate volunteer for IEEE, he currently serves as the Chair of the IEEE Young Professionals (YP) Committee. Previously, he served as Young Professional Representative on the IEEE-USA Board of Directors, Vice-Chair of IEEE Young Professionals, and the Power and Energy Society Student Chapters Committee Chair. He is also a past Region 3 YP Coordinator, IEEE YP Sri Lanka Affinity Group Chair, IEEE Piedomont Section Power and Energy Society Chapter Chair, IEEE Norway Webmaster, and Student Activities Committee Chair.

Chamika Sudusinghe
Chamika Sudusinghe is a second-year PhD student at the Siebel School of Computing and Data Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He is both an SRC Research Scholar and an NSF Graduate Fellow. Before pursuing his PhD, he worked as a Software Engineer at WSO2 LLC.
Since 2017, Chamika has been an active volunteer with IEEE, contributing to various global, regional, and sectional initiatives. In recognition of his contributions, he has received several prestigious awards, including the Upsilon Pi Epsilon Honor Society Award, the Lance Stafford Larson Student Award, and the Richard E. Merwin Student Scholarship. Chamika’s research has been featured in leading publications, such as Applied Soft Computing, IEEE Design & Test, and the Design, Automation, and Test in Europe (DATE) Conference.
Ana Inês Inácio
Ana Inês Inácio, was born and raised in Portugal and is currently living in The Netherlands. She is a Scientist at TNO, with an Analog IC Design expertise, she spends her time focusing on the design of future RF sensor systems needed to develop state-of-the-art radar technologies.
With over a decade of IEEE membership, Ana Inês has held various volunteer positions, including IEEE University of Aveiro SB Vice-Chair, Benelux YP Chair, R8 Student Representative and R8 YP Chair. She is currently the IEEE Young Professionals Vice-Chair and serves as Region 8 Young Professionals Past Chair. Ana Inês is also an active member of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Technology Society (MTT-S), she was the Region 8 YP representative for the past 4 years and she currently serves as the society’s IEEE YP Liaison.
What she loves about her daily work and volunteering work is transforming concepts into tangible solutions, making unexpected connections and facilitating collaboration among diverse teams.
Jenifer Castillo
Sales and Account Manager at Lufthansa Technik. Mechatronics Engineer, graduated from San Buenaventura University in Bogota Colombia. MBA – International Enterprises from the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico.
IEEE Senior member, being part of IEEE as member and volunteer for 21 years. currently, she is IEEE R9 Director 2024-2025, and good to know that she was elected Director when she was still a YP (in 2022!)
Also as a YP, she was the IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) Committee Chair 2021-2022, IEEE Industry Engagement Committee member 2021-2022, IEEE Puerto Rico and Caribbean (PR&C) Section Past-Chair, among many other positions in the past, including YP Chair of he sections, and Student Branch chair in her Alma Mater
Recognized with the IEEE MGA Achievement Award 2020, “For sustained and outstanding achievements in promoting Students, YP, and WIE membership development in Latin America and the Caribbean”, and the Oscar C. Fernández, IEEE Region 9 recognition to the outstanding volunteer in Latin America.
Alberto Tam Yong
Alberto Tam Yong is a Senior Electrical Engineer at Applied Medical in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA, innovating in the Technology and Development, Electrical, team to advance medical devices for minimally invasive surgery. He has experience in the design, prototype, and development of hardware electrical systems, and specializes in analog and digital circuit design. He received his BSc in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Riverside, in 2016.
He started volunteering for IEEE as the 2015-2016 Chair of the IEEE Student Branch at the University of California, Riverside, and has continued to volunteer for IEEE at the local Section, Regional, and global level. Currently, Alberto Tam Yong is a Vice Chair of the IEEE Young Professionals Committee, Chair of the IEEE Region 6 RSAC, Past Chair of IEEE Region 6 YP Committee, Chair of the IEEE Orange County Section, an organizing committee member for the IEEE Rising Stars Conference, a member of the IEEE OneIEEE for Students AdHoc Committee, and a member of the IEEE in 2050 and Beyond AdHoc Committee.

Samuel Stone
Alexis Gorgacz
Alexis is a Commissioning Engineer in the power utility industry. In her role, she focuses on substation transmission equipment testing including transformers, high-voltage circuit breakers, and protective relaying. Alexis has been an active IEEE volunteer for three years and also serves as her local IEEE section's Treasurer.
Sunny Arokia Swamy Bellary
Sunny Arokia Swamy Bellary is a Research Engineer at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), specializing in Substation Assets and Robotics. Since 2019, he has led the development of innovative robotics and AI solutions for substation asset inspection and physical security, driven by a commitment to advancing technology for societal benefit.
Sunny holds a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from UNC Charlotte, and Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from M.S.Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bangalore. During his time at UNC Charlotte, he earned the prestigious Joanna R. Baker Memorial Fellowship and the Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award in 2018. A prolific researcher, he has published papers, journal articles, and book chapters at various IEEE and Cigre conferences, along with numerous technical reports at EPRI.
An active IEEE member, Sunny has served as Chair of IEEE Charlotte Young Professionals and currently leads IEEE Region 3 Young Professionals. He is also passionate about mentoring, rural electrification projects like Project Belaku, and fostering innovation within the engineering community.
Christopher Lopez
Christopher Lopez (Chris) is a Principal Engineer at DTE Energy based in Detroit, Michigan. Chris has been working at DTE Energy since joining as a Co-op in January 2014. Today, he focusses on power distribution projects around the Detroit Metropolitan Area. This past December, Chris earned a Master of Science in electrical engineering at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.
Chris is serving as the Young Professionals Committee Chair in IEEE Region 4. In his role, he is committed to inspiring IEEE YP members to develop professionally through their involvement with IEEE. Chris enters this role with a great background in volunteerism through IEEE. He has served on the YP Committee in Region 4 since September 2022. As an undergraduate student, he was heavily involved with the IEEE student branch at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, and was once involved with the Student Activities Committee for Region 4.
Chris is very excited to continue his IEEE volunteer efforts as the YP Committee Chair in Region 4 and has a goal to get more YP members involved in the committee.
Haley Hirschfield
Haley graduated from Texas State University with a Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering with minors in Physics & Applied Mathematics. She works at a consulting firm called TRC Companies that helps develop & improves distribution grid expansion & reliability.
She has held positions as IEEE PI2 Austin's Secretary & Member at Large as well as IEEE Central Texas Section Young Professionals' Chair. In her free time, you can find her hiking, playing soccer, hanging out with friends, at a concert or just hanging out with her 5 year old Golden Retriever, Halo.
Brianne Tengan
Brianne Tengan is an Electrical Engineer with BAE Systems Inc. She obtained her Bachelor’s and Master's degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She is currently pursuing a Master’s in Systems Engineering & Technology Management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Brianne currently serves as the IEEE Region 6 Young Professionals Coordinator, IEEE Hawaii Section Chair, and IEEE Hawaii Oceanic Engineering, Aerospace & Electronic Systems, Geoscience & Remote Sensing, Robotics & Automation Chair.
Raghav Thanigaivel
Raghav is based out of Toronto and currently works as a Senior Engineer at Telus, where he is responsible for the automation of 4G and 5G Wireless Core Networks. In IEEE, he presently serves as the YP Awards & Recognition Lead and the R7 YP Coordinator.
In his previous job, he engaged in R&D at the US Department of Commerce. His research on Device-to-Device Communications resulted in potentially life-saving revisions to the Public Safety communication standards and a publication in IEEE.
He holds a Masters Degree in Telecommunications from University of Colorado Boulder, USA and a Bachelors Degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Amrita University, India. He has also completed the Mini-MBA program from Rutgers University and IEEE.
He is a Professional Engineer in Canada and holds multiple certifications, including IEEE's very own Wireless Communications Engineering Technologies (WCET). He is an Advanced Ham Radio operator in Canada and US. He is also a certified Advanced Operations Drone Pilot and Flight Reviewer in Canada.
Mohamed Saeed Darweesh
Mohamed Saeed Darweesh (M’17, SM’20) is currently working as an Associate Professor in the Electronics and Computer Engineering (ECE) Program at the School of Engineering and Applied Science, Nile University. Previously, I worked at the American University in Cairo (AUC), Zewail City (ZC) of Science and Technology, and the Institute of Aviation Engineering and Technology (IAET). I have 17 years of teaching experience as a teaching assistant, assistant professor, and associate professor at several universities.
I’m a Senior Member of the IEEE since 2020 and have served on the technical program committees of major IEEE conferences. Currently, I’m the IEEE Region 8 Young Professionals Committee Chairman 2025-2026, IEEE PowerAfrica Conference 2025 Treasurer, IEEE MELECON 2026 Treasurer, and the IEEE Egypt Section Secretary 2024-2025. Also, I’m an IEEE MGA Young Professionals Award Recipient in 2024.
I have a solid technical background with a strong interest in machine learning and artificial intelligence. I have led multiple research projects in the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning, healthcare, and Industry 4.0. I authored/co-authored over +90 papers in international journals and conferences.

Mohammed Hussein
Mohammed Hussein Saleh Mohammed Haram graduated from Multimedia University (MMU), Malaysia, in 2019 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. Following his graduation, he pursued a Master’s Degree in Engineering Science at the same university while working as a Graduate Research Assistant. Currently, Mohammed is a consultant at Impact Consulting in Yemen.
His areas of interest include Renewable Energy, Energy Storage Systems, Power Generation, Electrical Installations, and Second Life EV Batteries. Mohammed has been an active member of IEEE since 2016. He is currently volunteering as the IEEE Young Professionals Events Funding Chair and the IEEE PES Region 8 Students and Young Professionals (SYP) Committee Chair.
Mohammed has published several research papers and received numerous awards for his projects and volunteer contributions. His recent recognitions include the IEEE Richard E. Merwin Student Scholarship Award (2021), the IEEE Larry K. Wilson Regional Student Volunteer Award (2022), the IEEE MGA Young Professionals Achievement Award (2022), and the IEEE PES Outstanding Student Scholarship Award (2023).
Nuwanthi Abeygunawardena
Nuwanthi is a dedicated IEEE volunteer with a strong track record of leadership and service. It is her 7th year volunteering IEEE and she is the current Volunteering Lead of the IEEE Young Professionals Committee, driving initiatives to enhance volunteer engagement of the IEEE Volunteering Platform. Also she is the Assistant Treasurer of the IEEE Sri Lanka Section Executive Committee for the year 2025.
Nuwanthi has actively contributed to various IEEE programs under IEEE Sri Lanka Section including Innovation Nation Sri Lanka, Women in Engineering, and the Student Activities Committee, demonstrating her commitment to effective team leadership and project management. She is currently employed as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of SLIIT, Sri Lanka.
Pasan Pethiyagode
I work as a Lead Power Engineer at Alstom Transport UK. My technical interests are trackside power distribution for railway, smart transport solutions and renewable energy. I completed my Bachelors in Electrical Engineering from University of Moratuwa and Masters in Financial Economics from University of Colombo. I have been in YP committee since 2023, before which I served as the chairman of IEEE Sri Lanka section.
Yuhan Zheng
Currently a Ph.D. student in geography at the National University of Ireland, research focuses on global energy transition governance, specifically how energy innovation empowers local communities. Past experience includes contributing to the first global stocktake under the Paris Agreement while working with the UNFCCC secretariat. Present roles as the FAO Global Youth Policy Board for Asia-Pacific, and chairing the UNECE Young Working Group for Energy Systems. Contributions also extend to co-developing the WMO youth strategy and founding the Digital Ecology Lab at the BRICS IDEAS Center to advance sustainable development goals and integrate Indigenous knowledge into climate action.

Leadership roles include heading the IEEE Young Professionals Climate Task Force, fostering collaborations with organizations like IEA, IRENA, and SeForAll. As International Affairs Manager at WAGA, efforts are directed at addressing energy poverty in Africa through sustainable lithium-ion battery solutions. Engagements also include work with the Global Youth Security Council to address planetary risks.
Akarsh Ashok
Mr. Akarsh Ashok has been an active member of IEEE for the past eight years, beginning during his undergraduate studies. After earning his Master’s degree from NSS College of Engineering, he joined Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore, as a Research Associate and was later promoted to Faculty Associate in the TIFAC-CORE Cybersecurity Department. Currently, he is pursuing a PhD at the Singapore Institute of Technology, specializing in Large Language Models (LLM) and Reverse Engineering.
Cybele Ghanem
Cybele Ghanem is a Redhat Certified System Administrator, currently employed as a Systems Engineer working in Support and Implementation at Invigo Offshore. She also holds the position of eSIM Application Manager at the same company.
Cybele was recently chosen as one of the IEEE Computer Society 20 in their 20s honorees, identified as one of the emerging leaders in Computer science and Engineering. Additionally, she was honored with the IEEE MGA Young Professionals Achievement Award 2024 for her leadership in IEEE Day and IEEEXtreme.
Besides her professional experience, her interpersonal skills are highlighted in her volunteering work.
Cybele joined IEEE in 2016 and has been an active volunteer ever since. She was appointed as IEEE YP Climate and Sustainability Subcommittee Co-Chair 2025. She has been working with the Young Professionals community in Lebanon for the past 3 years, implementing strategic initiatives to empower the Lebanese youth, and she was elected as the Chairperson of IEEE Young Professionals Lebanon for 2025-2026. Additionally, she had numerous contributions in her Region, where she was appointed as Member of Region 8 Young Professionals team.
Vamsi Krishna Jadala
Vamsi Krishna J has been in the IEEE community for over a decade and is considered one of the mainstream prominent volunteer leaders. Since joining as a student member in 2011, Vamsi has shown active participation within this system and has also held varied leadership roles as the Chair of the IEEE Hyderabad Young Professionals Affinity Group, Vice Chair, IEEE India Council and Excom member of IEEE Hyderabad Section.
He is a prestigious 2019 IEEE MGA Young Professional Award and a 2021 IEEE India Council Outstanding YP Achievement Awardee that reflects not only his passion for technology, but also his successful professional career as Director-Economic Development with World Trade Centers at Shamshabad, Visakhapatnam, Genome Valley.
Susana Lau
Susana Lau is an Electronics and Telecommunications Engineer (2011) with a Master's in Information Technology from Carnegie Mellon University (2015), supported by a Fulbright-Senacyt scholarship.
She has 10+ years of IT project experience in Panama and Silicon Valley and founded EtyaLab in 2015, delivering 60+ tech projects for 40+ clients, including apps, e-commerce, and custom solutions. In 2016, she launched Mercadito, a mobile agri-tech startup, earning recognition as one of Forbes' 30 Business Promises (2019) and winning multiple national and international awards.
Susana has been featured in Forbes' 100 Powerful Women (2020, 2021) and actively supports women in STEM, mentoring at Startup Weekends and speaking at various events. PastIEEE Panama Section Chair (2023–2024) and former WIE Panama Chair (2019–2020), she led initiatives impacting 500+ students and earning global awards, including the WIE Inspiring Member of the Year and Affinity Group of the Year. She currently serves as VP of Products for IEEE Entrepreneurship.
In 2021, she co-founded the CREEA Foundation to foster education, culture, and entrepreneurship in Panama, training 300+ entrepreneurs with the U.S. Embassy’s Community Champions program.
She also serves on the boards of an insurance company and a bank, contributing to technology, audit, risk, and ethics committees.
Seif El Hajjem
Seif El HAJJEM is a Tunisian Industrial Engineer who graduated from the National Engineering School of Tunis in 2015. Currently a Project Manager at WYNSYS Tunisia, he excels in leading SAP implementation projects across various industries, driving operational efficiency and fostering innovation in business processes.
A passionate volunteer, Seif has been actively involved with IEEE since 2012, holding numerous leadership roles. He served as Chair of the IEEE ENIT Student Branch (2013–2014) and later took on key positions, including Membership Activities Vice Chair of IEEE Tunisia Section (2020–2021). From 2019 to 2024, he contributed to the IEEE Region 8 Young Professionals Committee, supporting initiatives across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
Currently, Seif leads the IEEE YP Industry & Career Subcommittee, serves as IEEE Africa Council Membership Activities Vice Chair, and is a member of the IEEE Region 8 Entrepreneurship Committee.
With a passion for mentoring and professional development, Seif is dedicated to empowering young engineers and fostering innovation within the global IEEE community.
Ashan Imantha M. H. Bandara
Ashan Imantha M.H. Bandara is a committed volunteer within the IEEE network, bringing over ten years of diverse experience. Currently, he serves as the Vitality Lead, having previously held roles such as Vitality Volunteer on the YPC and AG Coordinator for the Oceania Region in IEEE R10.
He also serves as Treasurer for the UQ IEEE HKN - Mu Kappa Chapter. A dedicated member of the IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) since his graduate studies, Ashan has significantly contributed to the IEEE PES Sri Lanka Chapter and was appointed Industrial Coordinator for the IEEE Young Professionals Sri Lanka Chapter in 2020.
He co-founded IEEE Y2NPro, a vital initiative supporting young professionals in Sri Lanka, while also implementing a robust financial policy framework. Ashan holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Philosophy in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of Peradeniya. He is currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Queensland, focusing on the electrical control of hybrid power plants, with research interests in renewable energy integration, power system control, and microgrids. In his free time, he enjoys wildlife photography and choral singing.
Polat Goktas
As the 2025 Chair of Digital Transformation and Innovation Hubs for IEEE Young Professionals (YPs), Dr. Polat Goktas aims to provide a dynamic platform that empowers YPs by fostering innovation, promoting cross-disciplinary collaboration, and facilitating knowledge exchange in emerging digital technologies. He is dedicated to developing initiatives that connect industry and academia, offering mentorship, resources, and opportunities for skill enhancement to help YPs thrive in the rapidly evolving digital landscape through IEEE YP Innovation Hubs Subcommittee.
Polat actively contributed to the IEEE YP Climate and Sustainability Task Force, leading strategic partnerships with organizations like SEforALL and IRENA Youth. He had co-organized key IEEE events, including IEEE New York Climate Week 2024, the Sustainable AI for 6G Communications session at IEEE ICNSC 2024 and the Distributed and Intelligent Edge Computing workshop at IEEE MECOM 2024.
With a strong commitment to advancing cutting-edge technologies, his interests span artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, the Internet of Things (IoT), and 5G/6G, with a particular focus on addressing global real-world challenges. Through his diverse roles and impactful contributions, Polat continues to drive the convergence of technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship, fostering solutions that tackle both present and future global challenges.
