2026 Executive Team
The IEEE Young Professionals program is brought to you through a strong collaborative effort between dedicated IEEE volunteers and professional staff. The executive team works closely with its volunteer representatives in each of the 10 IEEE Regions and over 30 IEEE Technical Societies to ensure that the quality of the program worldwide is consistent among local IEEE Young Professional Affinity Groups, IEEE Regions, and IEEE Technical Societies. Our primary goal is to deliver the best possible experience for you as an IEEE member, by helping you connect with your technical and professional community, and enable career development opportunities as you transition beyond undergraduate education and into the workforce, both in academia and industry.
Leadership
Saveethya Sivakumar
Saaveethya Sivakumar is a faculty member at Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering Curtin University Malaysia. She is also the program coordinator of Bachelor of Computing (Software Engineering) and Head of Training and Development with Faculty of Engineering and Science, Curtin University Malaysia. Saaveethya completed her PhD at Monash University and B.Eng. Electronic and Communication Engineering at Curtin University. She is the proud recipient of the Keysight Best Electronic Communication Graduate Award presented by Curtin Malaysia in 2015.
Her research focus lies in the areas of Machine learning, Signal Processing, Image Processing, Gait Analysis, Biomechanics, and Biomedical Engineering. Saaveethya is currently volunteering as the IEEE MGA Rep at IEEE Young Professionals 2023 and IEEE Region 10 (Asia Pacific) Young Professionals Committee Chair for 2021-2023. She is the immediate past Regional Student Representative of IEEE Region 10 for 2019-2020, for representing student members across the Asia Pacific. She is the recipient of Malaysia Section Women In Engineering Outstanding Volunteer Award in 2016 and IEEE MGA Young Professionals Achievement Award in 2021.
She is strongly interested and motivated in developing STEM skills of students at their early learning stages providing university and pre-university students with interactive learning and collaborative research. As such, her future perspective is to create better wellbeing for existing social needs especially in the field of healthcare technology
Hasala Dharmawardena
Hasala Dharmawardena is an Electric Power Engineer with a combined eleven years of experience working in the design, construction, and commissioning of power systems and in the research and development of transmission and distribution system technology. Hasala specializes in modeling, simulation, and optimization of power systems. He obtained his doctoral degree at Clemson University, USA, master’s degree at NTNU, Norway, and bachelor’s degree at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, all in Electric Power Engineering. He works as a power system consultant at Leidos.
Hasala is an avid energy policy advocate and has contributed to numerous utility rate cases across the globe. A passionate volunteer for IEEE, he currently serves as the Chair of the IEEE Young Professionals (YP) Committee. Previously, he served as Young Professional Representative on the IEEE-USA Board of Directors, Vice-Chair of IEEE Young Professionals, and the Power and Energy Society Student Chapters Committee Chair. He is also a past Region 3 YP Coordinator, IEEE YP Sri Lanka Affinity Group Chair, IEEE Piedomont Section Power and Energy Society Chapter Chair, IEEE Norway Webmaster, and Student Activities Committee Chair.
Vice Chairs, MGA & TAB Reps
Nuwanthi Abeygunawardena
Nuwanthi Abeygunawardena is the Vice Chair and TAB Representative of the IEEE Young Professionals Committee. She has over eight years of volunteering experience within IEEE, having served in multiple leadership roles at Student Branch, Section, and global levels.
She holds both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering and currently works as a Lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT), Sri Lanka.
Ana Inês Inácio
Ana Inês Inácio, was born and raised in Portugal and is currently living in The Netherlands. She is a Scientist at TNO, with an Analog IC Design expertise, she spends her time focusing on the design of future RF sensor systems needed to develop state-of-the-art radar technologies.
With over a decade of IEEE membership, Ana Inês has held various volunteer positions, including IEEE University of Aveiro SB Vice-Chair, Benelux YP Chair, R8 Student Representative and R8 YP Chair. She is currently the IEEE Young Professionals Vice-Chair and serves as Region 8 Young Professionals Past Chair. Ana Inês is also an active member of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Technology Society (MTT-S), she was the Region 8 YP representative for the past 4 years and she currently serves as the society’s IEEE YP Liaison.
What she loves about her daily work and volunteering work is transforming concepts into tangible solutions, making unexpected connections and facilitating collaboration among diverse teams.
Alberto Tam Yong
Alberto Tam Yong is a Senior Electrical Engineer at Applied Medical in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA, innovating in the Technology and Development, Electrical, team to advance medical devices for minimally invasive surgery. He has experience in the design, prototype, and development of hardware electrical systems, and specializes in analog and digital circuit design. He received his BSc in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Riverside, in 2016.
He started volunteering for IEEE as the 2015-2016 Chair of the IEEE Student Branch at the University of California, Riverside, and has continued to volunteer for IEEE at the local Section, Regional, and global level. Currently, Alberto Tam Yong is a Vice Chair of the IEEE Young Professionals Committee, Chair of the IEEE Region 6 RSAC, Past Chair of IEEE Region 6 YP Committee, Chair of the IEEE Orange County Section, an organizing committee member for the IEEE Rising Stars Conference, a member of the IEEE OneIEEE for Students AdHoc Committee, and a member of the IEEE in 2050 and Beyond AdHoc Committee.
Sajith Wijesuriya
He is the YP Vice Chair of IEEE Young Professionals Lead on Climate, Sustainability, and Innovation processes and the TAB representative from YP. He is also the IEEE MGA representative to IEEE Technology for a Sustainable Climate Matrix Organization (TSCMO). Sajith is also a Researcher at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory of the United States.
He obtained his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines in 2020. He currently works at the Building Thermal Energy Science (BTES) group in Mechanical and Thermal Engineering Sciences (MTES) directorate at NREL. His research involves grid-level decarbonization, increasing resilience of human settlements against extreme climates, advanced building energy modeling and advanced thermal energy storage systems analysis.
In addition to that he is a Visiting Scientist at the Colorado School of Mines. Furthermore, as a part of his researcher position he works for three Clean Energy Ministerial work streams.

Sam Stone
Sam Stone is Young Professionals Coordinator for IEEE Region 1 and Treasurer for the IEEE Syracuse Section. In his spare time, Sam is an Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Engineer at Lockheed Martin. He is dedicated to supporting Young Professionals and Students in the IEEE and their careers.
Alexis Gorgacz
Alexis is a Commissioning Engineer in the power utility industry. In her role, she focuses on substation transmission equipment testing including transformers, high-voltage circuit breakers, and protective relaying. Alexis has been an active IEEE volunteer for three years and also serves as her local IEEE section's Treasurer.
Sunny Arokia Swamy Bellary
Sunny Arokia Swamy Bellary is a Research Engineer at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), specializing in Substation Assets and Robotics. Since 2019, he has led the development of innovative robotics and AI solutions for substation asset inspection and physical security, driven by a commitment to advancing technology for societal benefit.
Sunny holds a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from UNC Charlotte, and Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from M.S.Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bangalore. During his time at UNC Charlotte, he earned the prestigious Joanna R. Baker Memorial Fellowship and the Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award in 2018. A prolific researcher, he has published papers, journal articles, and book chapters at various IEEE and Cigre conferences, along with numerous technical reports at EPRI.
An active IEEE member, Sunny has served as Chair of IEEE Charlotte Young Professionals and currently leads IEEE Region 3 Young Professionals. He is also passionate about mentoring, rural electrification projects like Project Belaku, and fostering innovation within the engineering community.
Christopher Lopez
Chris is serving as the Young Professionals Committee Chair in IEEE Region 4. In his role, he is committed to inspiring IEEE YP members to develop professionally through their involvement with IEEE. Chris is also committed to growing as a Young Professional, himself.
Chris completed his B.S. in Electrical Engineering at Wayne State University in December 2017 and completed his M.S. in Engineering at the University of Michigan-Dearborn in December 2024.
When he is not volunteering with IEEE or taking a class, Chris works as an engineer at DTE Energy. Chris loves his job and is grateful for the opportunities he gets to work on major engineering projects for the company.
Daniel Thomson
Proud husband. Father of two amazing boys. Serial IEEE volunteer. Originally from sunny Cape Town, South Africa. Works as a senior engineer for the Advanced Special Communications team at Sandia National Labs. Holds a B.Sci. Comp. Eng. from BYU-Idaho and a M.Sci. Comp. Eng. from UNM. Special interests in LEO Sats and low data rate communications.
Nima Javanbakht
Nima Javanbakht (Member, IEEE) is a senior RF engineer with Sanmina corporation and adjunct professor at Carleton university since 2021. He is a passionate volunteer and has been volunteering with IEEE for several years in different capacities. Nima is currently the Chair of Region 7 Young Professionals, and committee member in YP ComSoc, YP MTTS, and IEEE Entrepreneurship.
Nima received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Carleton University, Ottawa, ON, Canada, in 2021. He has authored and co-authored more than 70 technical papers. His research interests include antennas, wireless communications, miniaturized antenna, integrated RF module, frequency synthesizer, optical pluggable modules, and microwave sensors.
Mohamed Saeed Darweesh
Mohamed Saeed Darweesh (M’17, SM’20) is currently working as an Associate Professor in the Electronics and Computer Engineering (ECE) Program at the School of Engineering and Applied Science, Nile University. Previously, he worked at the American University in Cairo (AUC), Zewail City (ZC) of Science and Technology, and the Institute of Aviation Engineering and Technology (IAET). He has 18 years of teaching experience as a teaching assistant, assistant professor, and associate professor at several universities.
Mohamed is a Senior Member of the IEEE since 2020 and has served on the technical program committees of major IEEE conferences. Currently, he is serving as the IEEE Region 8 Young Professionals Committee Chairman 2025-26, IEEE MGA Student Activities Committee, Young Professionals Representative 2026, IEEE MELECON 2026 Treasurer, and the IEEE Egypt Section Secretary 2024-2027. Also, he is an IEEE MGA Young Professionals Award Recipient in 2024.
Mohamed has a solid technical background with a strong interest in machine learning and artificial intelligence. He has led multiple research projects in the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning, healthcare, and Industry 4.0. He authored/co-authored over +100 papers in international journals and conferences.
Mayumi Suzuki
"Mayumi Suzuki (M’09–SM’22) is currently pursuing the Ph.D. degree in engineering at Ritsumeikan University, Shiga, Japan.
From 2011 to the present, she has been with Hitachi, Ltd., Tokyo, Japan, where she currently holds the position of Senior Researcher. Her research interests focus on the development of healthcare equipment, including laboratory testing systems, and advancing medicine through healthcare informatics."
Task Force
Chamika Sudusinghe
Chamika Sudusinghe is a second-year PhD student at the Siebel School of Computing and Data Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He is both an SRC Research Scholar and an NSF Graduate Fellow. Before pursuing his PhD, he worked as a Software Engineer at WSO2 LLC.
Since 2017, Chamika has been an active volunteer with IEEE, contributing to various global, regional, and sectional initiatives. In recognition of his contributions, he has received several prestigious awards, including the Upsilon Pi Epsilon Honor Society Award, the Lance Stafford Larson Student Award, and the Richard E. Merwin Student Scholarship. Chamika’s research has been featured in leading publications, such as Applied Soft Computing, IEEE Design & Test, and the Design, Automation, and Test in Europe (DATE) Conference.
Mohammed Hussein
Mohammed Hussein Saleh Mohammed Haram graduated from Multimedia University (MMU), Malaysia, in 2019 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. Following his graduation, he pursued a Master’s Degree in Engineering Science at the same university while working as a Graduate Research Assistant. Currently, Mohammed is a consultant at Impact Consulting in Yemen.
His areas of interest include Renewable Energy, Energy Storage Systems, Power Generation, Electrical Installations, and Second Life EV Batteries. Mohammed has been an active member of IEEE since 2016. He is currently volunteering as the IEEE Young Professionals Events Funding Chair and the IEEE PES Region 8 Students and Young Professionals (SYP) Committee Chair.
Mohammed has published several research papers and received numerous awards for his projects and volunteer contributions. His recent recognitions include the IEEE Richard E. Merwin Student Scholarship Award (2021), the IEEE Larry K. Wilson Regional Student Volunteer Award (2022), the IEEE MGA Young Professionals Achievement Award (2022), and the IEEE PES Outstanding Student Scholarship Award (2023).
Pasan Pethiyagode
I work as a Lead Power Engineer at Alstom Transport UK. My technical interests are trackside power distribution for railway, smart transport solutions and renewable energy. I completed my Bachelors in Electrical Engineering from University of Moratuwa and Masters in Financial Economics from University of Colombo. I have been in YP committee since 2023, before which I served as the chairman of IEEE Sri Lanka section.
Yuhan Zheng
Yuhan Zheng is a climate entrepreneur and researcher focused on energy innovation governance. He currently serves as the Asia-Pacific Partnership Lead for the Nobel Sustainability Trust, where he spearheads the annual AI & Sustainability Summit and leads the development of the NST Academy framework to advance scalable sustainability projects in the region.
As a PhD candidate in Geography at the National University of Ireland, his research examines the global governance of energy transitions. His professional experience includes contributing to the first Global Stocktake at the UNFCCC and chairing the Young Working Group on Just Transition at the UNECE Sustainable Energy Division.
Yuhan holds several global leadership roles, including Co-Chair of the IEEE Young Professionals Climate and Sustainability Task Force and Counselor for the Global Youth Security Council at One Young World. He also serves on the Global Policy Board of the World Food Forum (FAO) and applies his expertise part-time as International Affairs Manager for the renewable energy company WAGA Technologies.
Joel John Kandathil
Joel John Kandathil is a globally active IEEE volunteer, communications leader, and software developer with a passion for building communities through design, storytelling, and strategy. With experience spanning Student Activities, Young Professionals, and Entrepreneurship initiatives across IEEE Region 10 and IEEE MGA, he has led branding, digital engagement, and ambassador networks that support hundreds of volunteers and events worldwide. A recipient of multiple IEEE awards, Joel is driven by the joy of volunteering and a belief that thoughtful communication can turn ideas into impact.
Ilse Jiménez
Ilse Jiménez is an engineering leader and the current Chair of the Training Subcommittee for IEEE Young Professionals. With a strong focus on professional growth, Ilse also served as an IEEE Industry Ambassador, where she workedto bridge the gap between global industry demands and the technical community.
Her leadership experience includes a successful tenure as the IEEE Day Regional Lead for Region 9, managing high-level coordination across Latin America.
Ilse is dedicated to creating strategic training frameworks that empower young engineers to excel in industrial environments and emerge as global leaders.
Seif El Hajjem
Seif El HAJJEM is a Tunisian Industrial Engineer who graduated from the National Engineering School of Tunis in 2015. Currently a Project Manager at WYNSYS Tunisia, he excels in leading SAP implementation projects across various industries, driving operational efficiency and fostering innovation in business processes.
A passionate volunteer, Seif has been actively involved with IEEE since 2012, holding numerous leadership roles. He served as Chair of the IEEE ENIT Student Branch (2013–2014) and later took on key positions, including Membership Activities Vice Chair of IEEE Tunisia Section (2020–2021). From 2019 to 2024, he contributed to the IEEE Region 8 Young Professionals Committee, supporting initiatives across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
Currently, Seif leads the IEEE YP Industry & Career Subcommittee, serves as IEEE Africa Council Membership Activities Vice Chair, and is a member of the IEEE Region 8 Entrepreneurship Committee.
With a passion for mentoring and professional development, Seif is dedicated to empowering young engineers and fostering innovation within the global IEEE community.
Ashan Imantha M. H. Bandara
Ashan Imantha M.H. Bandara is a committed volunteer within the IEEE network, bringing over ten years of diverse experience. Currently, he serves as the Vitality Lead, having previously held roles such as Vitality Volunteer on the YPC and AG Coordinator for the Oceania Region in IEEE R10.
He also serves as Treasurer for the UQ IEEE HKN - Mu Kappa Chapter. A dedicated member of the IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) since his graduate studies, Ashan has significantly contributed to the IEEE PES Sri Lanka Chapter and was appointed Industrial Coordinator for the IEEE Young Professionals Sri Lanka Chapter in 2020.
He co-founded IEEE Y2NPro, a vital initiative supporting young professionals in Sri Lanka, while also implementing a robust financial policy framework. Ashan holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Philosophy in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of Peradeniya. He is currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Queensland, focusing on the electrical control of hybrid power plants, with research interests in renewable energy integration, power system control, and microgrids. In his free time, he enjoys wildlife photography and choral singing.
Polat Goktas
As the 2025 Chair of Digital Transformation and Innovation Hubs for IEEE Young Professionals (YPs), Dr. Polat Goktas aims to provide a dynamic platform that empowers YPs by fostering innovation, promoting cross-disciplinary collaboration, and facilitating knowledge exchange in emerging digital technologies. He is dedicated to developing initiatives that connect industry and academia, offering mentorship, resources, and opportunities for skill enhancement to help YPs thrive in the rapidly evolving digital landscape through IEEE YP Innovation Hubs Subcommittee.
Polat actively contributed to the IEEE YP Climate and Sustainability Task Force, leading strategic partnerships with organizations like SEforALL and IRENA Youth. He had co-organized key IEEE events, including IEEE New York Climate Week 2024, the Sustainable AI for 6G Communications session at IEEE ICNSC 2024 and the Distributed and Intelligent Edge Computing workshop at IEEE MECOM 2024.
With a strong commitment to advancing cutting-edge technologies, his interests span artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, the Internet of Things (IoT), and 5G/6G, with a particular focus on addressing global real-world challenges. Through his diverse roles and impactful contributions, Polat continues to drive the convergence of technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship, fostering solutions that tackle both present and future global challenges.
Chayanika Awasthi
Hisham Neyaz
Hisham Neyaz is a PhD candidate at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) with a multidisciplinary background in biomedical signal processing, data analysis, and automotive engineering. His current research focuses on EEG bio-signal processing and removal of physiological artifacts using deep learning techniques to enhance cognitive recognition and signal quality.
He has over 5 years of ongoing experience in engineering business management, actively working in areas such as branding, quality confirmation, project planning, and execution. Hisham is also a registered engineer under the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), demonstrating his professional standing and technical expertise.
Hisham has been a dedicated IEEE volunteer for more than 10 years, with over five years of continuous service in the IEEE Malaysia Section. At the global level, he currently serves as the Operations Lead for IEEE Young Professionals under the IEEE Member and Geographic Activities (MGA), contributing to governance strategies, policy development, and operational excellence. He is also a member of the Advisory Committee for IEEE Young Professionals Region 10, focusing on regional engagement and leadership development.
His past contributions include roles in the IEEE YP Region 10 Team and the IEEE MGA YP Event Funding Team, where he supported the planning and execution of high-impact initiatives. As part of the IEEE YP Vitality Team, he continues to work on energizing the global YP network through community-building, visibility, and sustainability efforts.
In recognition of his leadership and volunteerism, Hisham received the IEEE Malaysia Outstanding Student Volunteer Award in 2021.
