Satellite Computing Power Networks: Introduction, Developments, and Future Perspectives

August 29 @ 8:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Invited Talk
Satellite Computing Power Networks: Introduction, Developments, and Future Perspectives
Professor Bomin Mao
Northwestern Polytechnical University, China
About the Talk
The commercial applications of Starlink have inspired worldwide countries and organizations to compete the construction of satellite constellations, especially in the area of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. The deployment of Inter-Satellite Links (ISLs) has constructed the satellite networks crossing different orbits and constellations. Researchers have also considered the connections of satellites of different functions to realize the Integrated Communications, Navigation, and remote Sensing (ICNS), which can mutually promote the provided service quality. Another trend is the continuously growing computation capacity of satellite hardware to enable the onboard processing of different kinds of tasks, which can further alleviate the latency and transmission overhead. Satellite Computing Power Networks (SCPNs) can realize the coordination of different satellites to provide enough computation resource. In this talk, we first introduce the basic knowledge of satellite communications. Then, the advantages and development of ICNS and SCPNs are explained. Finally, the challenges and future directions connecting AI and LLM will be discussed.
About the Speaker
Bomin Mao is currently a Professor in Northwestern Polytechnical University, China. He was an associate professor (from 2020 to 2021) and an assistant professor (from 2019 to 2020) in Tohoku University, Japan. His research interests involve satellite networks, Internet of Things (IoT), vehicular networks, and edge computing. He received several Best Paper Awards from international conferences, namely IEEE GLOBECOM’17, GLOBECOM’18, IC-NIDC’18, ICC’23, and WOCC’23. He was a recipient of the prestigious IEEE ComSoc TCCN Publication Contribution Award (2024), IEEE ComSoc Asia Pacific Outstanding Paper Award (2020), Niwa Yasujiro Outstanding Paper Award (2019), and IEEE Computer Society Tokyo/Japan Joint Local Chapters Young Author Award (2020). He has been an associate editor for IEEE TVT, IoTJ, and Network.
