HELIOCOMM: Architecting the Next Generation of Resilient and Autonomous Solar Fields
Traditional control systems for Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plants rely on rigid, wired architectures that are costly to install and maintain, difficult to scale, and struggle with real-time operational demands. This talk introduces a transformative framework that leverages Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and advanced wireless communication technologies to create intelligent, autonomous, and resilient solar energy systems. The talk introduces HELIOCOMM, a holistic, SDN-based architecture that decouples the network's control logic from the physical hardware, enabling centralized management and programmability. This approach addresses critical challenges in large-scale solar fields, including interference management, energy efficiency, and low-latency data transmission. By replacing complex cabling with a flexible wireless infrastructure, this framework significantly reduces costs, enhances scalability, and improves operational efficiency, paving the way for the next generation of sustainable solar power.
