Mr. Shivam Abhilash is currently serving as Vice-chair at IEEE CS Students and Young Professionals (SYP) MGA Board and advisor at IEEE IAS SB Chapter Jadavpur University. On the professional side, Shivam is working as an Engineering Specialist in ZS Associates with Mr. Sandeep Varma, his work revolves around Natural Language Processing, Graph Embedding, Search, and Signal Processing. He has been an active research contributor with disseminations in IEEE, Springer, and De-Gruyter. He graduated specializing in Information technology from the Indian Institute of Information Technology Allahabad.
How and when did you start volunteering for IEEE?
I started my volunteering journey back in 2015 as a member of the IEEE Student Branch IIIT Allahabad, my first experience with IEEE was a mixed bag. I remember myself as a volunteer hearing Machine Learning Talk by Prof. Deb and at the same time ensuring that the logistics are properly arranged for the rest of the participants. I would say this is one of the first steps in the area of Machine Learning and Volunteering.
What have you done as an IEEE volunteer that you’re most proud of?
As an IEEE Volunteer, I have been critical in increasing the industry-academia collaboration by bringing sponsorships, projects, and internships. We even have a six-month internship program which was supported by an industrial mentor and finally the best project was awarded in one of the national level IEEE CS Events.
How do you leverage IEEE for your learning?
IEEE has been an important part of my career, right from giving me professional exposure before actually joining my job to improving my leadership qualities by giving me a platform to try and test before you implement. The impact that IEEE has silently brought on me is huge; it has helped me shape as a better individual.
What do you expect from IEEE experience in the future?
We all volunteer so that we can create a similar environment where we would have felt comfortable, I am thriving hard to ensure that I can increase the inflow of Early Career Professionals and link them with students so that a strong industry-academia collaboration is built across the globe. This will help in bringing research ideas to application.
What advice would you give to new volunteers?
Volunteering with passion and without expectation is the key, the word volunteer means that you are planning to do something to help a committee and in general humanity. I always think IEEE gives you that platform where you can shape things that you want to see in this world.
