Past November the IEEE Signal Processing Society(SPS) hosted the 6th IEEE Global Conference on Signal and Information Processing(GlobalSIP) in Anaheim, home to California’s Disneyland. Keeping the fun spirit of the place alive, IEEE Young Professionals in Signal Processing Subcommittee organised an event themed ‘Engineering Career Speed Dating’ for students and young professionals from all across the globe during GlobalSIP 2018.
Jeremy Webb, a Sr. Design Engineer at Apple and also a YP Subcommittee member, conducted the event with panellists from IBM, Boeing, Philips, and Mathworks. During the event, there were five tables each with a panellist and the attendees rotated among these tables every 15 minutes. Each panellist gave a brief overview of their career path followed by direct interactions with the attendees. The attendees were really invested in what the presenters were saying and several questions were being asked.
Two of the five panellists mentioned that they had gotten one of their career moves or assignments by identifying a need in the company and pitching the idea to a contact in the company. Cliff Cousins from Boeing shared his advice with the attendees – “When considering an investment to your profession or to your education, make sure you research and measure the return on investment. I work with many patent lawyers who went through much more schooling and expense to become lawyers, but with a patent license and a technology degree, I am able to do the same work.”
The Engineering Career Speed Dating event served as a comfortable setting for the attendees to connect with each other. “GlobalSIP is the first conference I’ve presented a paper at, and the YP event was helpful for meeting new people and networking.” – said one of them.
The Young Professionals in Signal Processing Subcommittee aspires to continue organizing similar events during future SPS conferences to foster connections and networking among young professionals.
