• IEEE Young Professionals Global Representation at IEEE R8 SYP Congress 2024

    The IEEE R8 SYP Congress, held in Grenoble, France from July 15th to 19th, 2024, was a resounding success, drawing together a vibrant community of students and young professionals to explore cutting-edge technologies and foster innovation. It consisted of Informative keynotes, plenary sessions, round tables, technical visits as well as delightful gatherings. As a primary organizer of this biennial event, the IEEE Young Professionals Committee contributed significantly to the IEEE R8 SYP Congress by hosting several sessions moderated by members and representatives of the committee. These sessions enhanced the overall value of the congress.

    The keynote session, titled “Accelerate Your Leadership Journey with IEEE Young Professionals,” was delivered by Anand Shah, the Technical Activities Lead, and Phyllis Caputo, the IEEE Staff Lead. They discussed current YP programs, including rebates, informational dashboards, YP mentoring support, and the newly formed YP TAB Ad-Hoc. Additionally, the session announced the upcoming cross-sectional event and encouraged participation in related YP workshops for more details. The speakers also provided a glimpse into the next R8 SYP Congress in 2026.

    Raghav Thanigaivel, the lead of the IEEE YP Awards and Recognitions subcommittee conducted a workshop to ponder impactful ways to acknowledge and empower emerging talents in IEEE. The group brainstormed essential strategies to reward and celebrate the talents of Young Professionals. The key takeaways from this meeting, i.e. new YP awards and recognitions would be further vetted for feasibility and planned to be implemented accordingly.

    Lead IEEE Volunteering Platform, Nuwanthi Abeygunawardena facilitated one of the Round Table discussions titled “Volunteering on Your Terms.” Participants explored how to effectively use the IEEE volunteering platform to find opportunities that align with their availability and interests. New features of the IEEE volunteering platform were also discussed.

    Ziad Diab, the Global Events Lead of the Mentoring-Meet Program, moderated a round table titled “Building Careers Together: The Power of Career Mentorship.” During the session, he led discussions on the vital role of mentorship in career development, explored various mentorship models, and provided a comprehensive outline of the steps needed for effective mentorship. Additionally, the round table addressed the challenges faced in running mentorship programs. The session was filled with inspiring insights and meaningful exchanges, highlighting the profound impact mentorship can have on professional growth and community building.

    The final Round Table, conducted by Anand Shah, Technical Activities Lead and Samuel Stone, R1 YP Representative explored career paths for students and young professionals. Participants discussed the pros and cons of pursuing a PhD, MSc, industry, or R&D role and how IEEE plays a role in that decision. They also touched on the topic of IEEE resources available to support these career paths.

    Overall, the IEEE R8 SYP Grenoble Congress offered a valuable platform for young professionals to connect, learn, and grow.
