Who is a Society/Council Young Professionals Chair/Representative/Liaison?

Represent early-career members (within 15 years post-graduation) in your Society or Council.

Serve as the connection between your Society/Council and the IEEE Young Professionals global community.

Design and lead initiatives aligned with the interests and needs of the Young Professionals within your parent Society.

Advocate for young member involvement, leadership growth, and strategic input.

Ensure your role is reported – listed on your Society/Council website and roster.

Meet Your Leaders: Participate in all required meetings of your Society or Council and the IEEE YP Committee, while fostering strong relationships with leadership to ensure alignment and collaboration

Build a Team (Optional but encouraged): Recruit other young professionals to help with planning and execution

Your Core Responsibilities​

  • Organize activities for young professionals: workshops, panels, mixers, etc.
  • Submit regular reports to Society/Council leadership and the IEEE YP Committee.
  • Provide input to Society strategic planning with a young professional perspective.
  • Promote YP involvement at conferences and Society events.
  • Support membership growth by developing initiatives that attract, retain, and engage young professionals within your Society or Council.

Plan and Execute

    • Skill-building workshops
    • Networking mixers
    • Industry site visits
    • Young professional panels at conferences
    • Virtual events such as webinars, online networking sessions, and virtual career fairs

  • Develop a Roadmap and Measure Success:
    • Create a clear event roadmap outlining objectives, timelines, and responsibilities.
    • Define Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as event attendance, member engagement, feedback scores, and membership growth to evaluate the impact of your activities and guide continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with Regional/Sectional Teams: Work closely with regional/sectional YP groups to share best practices, co-host events, and broaden engagement across geographic areas.
  • Use IEEE Resources: Access planning guides, templates, and event examples from IEEE YP.
  • Learn the Tools: Get familiar with IEEE platforms like IEEE Collabratec, and IEEE Volunteering.

Secure Funding

  • Apply for IEEE YP Funding: Look into STEP, Local Activity and Meet-ups (apply early!).
  • Budget from Your Society/Council: Request a dedicated YP budget during the annual planning cycle.
  • Partner Locally: Collaborate with IEEE Sections, Student Branches, and Chapters.
  • Seek Sponsorship: Develop a sponsorship brochure that clearly outlines sponsorship packages, branding opportunities, and the benefits of supporting YP initiatives to attract industry partners and local companies.

Promote Your Events

  • Request the IEEE YP Event Kit by emailing yp@ieee.org at least 4–6 weeks in advance.
  • Follow IEEE YP branding and design guidelines.
  • Promote via:
    • Social Media Channels (Dedicated LinkedIn pages, Facebook groups, and WhatsApp communities)
    • Newsletters and announcements through curated mailing lists
    • Society websites and official conference platforms
    • Features through the IEEE Young Professionals Scoop publication

Follow Up After the Event

  • Report & Reflect:
    • Write an IEEE YP Impact Blog post.
    • Share event highlights on social media, IEEE Young Professionals Scoop
    • Submit a report to Society and YP leadership.
  • Gather Feedback: Use surveys to collect input for future improvements.
  • Keep Engaged: Invite attendees to upcoming events and networking opportunities.
  • Analyze Key Performance Indicators:
    • Attendance rate: Compare actual turnout vs. target goals.
    • Engagement level: Measure participation during sessions, Q&A, or interactive elements.
    • Satisfaction scores: Analyze survey ratings and qualitative feedback.
    • Membership growth: Track new member sign-ups or YP participation increases post-event.
    • Social media metrics: Monitor likes, shares, comments, and reach of event posts.

Ensuring Long-Term Impact

  • Have a senior volunteer as a mentor to help and guide them
  • Mentor New Leaders: Identify and train successors to ensure continuity.
  • Document Everything: Save event plans, contacts, and useful notes for future reps.
  • Show Impact:
    • Share success stories and results with Society leadership.
    • Highlight your YP team’s contributions during strategic discussions.
